Google has expanded its Android Earthquake Alerts System to reach more than 200 regions, significantly broadening its global reach. This expansion includes countries such as Panama and Guatemala, among many others, bringing the total number of supported regions beyond the previous 98.
Since launching in 2021, the system has sent over one billion alerts, demonstrating its widespread use and effectiveness in providing timely warnings. The alerts are designed to offer users a few seconds of warning before an earthquake hits, giving them crucial time to take cover and protect themselves and their loved ones.
The Be Ready alert has been enhanced with new helpful guidance, ensuring users receive accurate and actionable information during seismic events. Users will see a map with a radius of where shaking has been detected, estimated earthquake magnitude, actions they can take, and more information in seconds if an earthquake occurs in a region where alerts are active.
Android users can expect to see one of three alerts depending on the severity and proximity of the earthquake. These alerts are part of the world's largest mobile-based earthquake detection network, which continues to evolve with new features and improvements aimed at increasing user safety and preparedness.
